Considering it’s Halloween, instead of focusing on the best teams and games of the week, let’s take a look at the teams in the scariest positions (and the Seahawks) as we enter the midseason.
Seahawks VS Bye Week:
The Seahawks are on a bye this week, after a dominant win over the Houston Texans on October 20th]. Since it is a bye week, it is a great time to reflect on how this team has looked through seven games, and where to go from here. Overall, this team looks amazing, and in my opinion, could compete with anybody. The defense has looked phenomenal, with our defensive line getting a crazy amount of pressures and 23 sacks. We are the number two ranked DVOA (Defense adjusted Value Over Average) defense, only behind the juggernaut Detroit Lions. Our defense has only allowed two rushing touchdowns and are allowing teams to score only 19.4 points on average. The defense has done all that without most of the starting secondary, which seems to be getting healthier every day. Once the main pieces that are missing (CB Devon “Spoon” Witherspoon and S Julian Love) return, this defense will be almost unstoppable. As for the offense, the Seahawks still have some room for improvement, but are still a very good offense. Quarterback Sam “GEQBUS” Darnold is playing like an MVP, and Wide Receiver Jaxon “JSN” Smith-Njigba is also playing like an MVP (though he isn’t a real consideration for the award since he isn’t a QB), and now has the second most receiving yards through seven games, in between Isaac Bruce and Jerry Rice, as well as leading the league in receiving yards. He is currently on pace to get 1,989 receiving yards, well above the current all-time record of 1,964. The rest of the offense is also playing amazingly, especially our offensive line, which was awful last year. Rookie Left Guard Grey Zabel is playing excellent football, only allowing 10 pressures and 0 sacks so far. Sophomore Tight End AJ Barner is also playing great, averaging 11 yards per reception and grabbing four touchdowns. While this offense is playing great, there are some improvements that can be made. The offensive line has played great pass protection, but there needs to be improvement in run blocking. The offensive play calling by Offensive Coordinator Klint Kubiak has had some interesting decisions as well. There have been several times when we have gotten too cute on offense, which has made for some big mistakes, failures to convert on downs and turnovers. While there are some issues with this team I would like to see worked out, I expect General Manager John Schneider to make some moves to fix them. Regardless of those problems, given the Seahawks’ remaining schedule, I can only see them losing two to three more games this season.
Bengals VS Jets:
Ah, the New York Jets. There are very few franchises that can summarize their history in a single play, or even a single game for that matter. But the Jets have one of these plays that Jets fans know all too well, known as the butt fumble. On that play in a game against the prime New England Patriots, Quarterback Mark Sanchez turned the wrong way to hand the ball off to his running back, making him run past him. To try and salvage the play, Sanchez scrambled forward, running into the buttocks of one of his offensive lineman, making him fumble, which was then scooped up by the defense and ran it in for a touchdown, contributing to a final score of 49-19. That one play has been able to summarise the entire Jets franchise for the past 13 years. The Jets have managed to fumble on every decision for the past 13 years, whether that be quarterbacks, head coaches, or general managers, on their path to have the longest current postseason drought of any team in all of North American sports. This tradition has continued this year, starting the season 0-7 under rookie head coach Aaron Glenn, which is the longest opening losing streak of any first-year Jets Head Coach. This losing streak has put them in a prime position to get the #1 overall pick in 2026. Naturally, the Jets fumbled this position by winning in an offensive shootout against the Bengals. While this is a good thing for the team, I hear Jets fans celebrating this too much, as my expectations are still low for the Jets. While it is impressive for your offense to put up 39 points, the Bengals also have one of the worst offenses in the league and lost their best defensive player early in the game. While it is nice to get your first win after so long, looking at the rest of your schedule, I can’t imagine the Jets getting more than 2-3 more wins this season, but knowing them, I wouldn’t be surprised seeing them win just enough games to give up the 1st overall pick. When I asked my father (a Jets fan) for comment on this team, he only said “It’s not easy being green.” Jets fans already know what I’m going to say: Just End The Season.
Falcons VS Dolphins:
Now, what this game was supposed to be was an easy win for a middling team in the Atlanta Falcons after a disappointing loss, against a bad team with a laundry list of problems in the Miami Dolphins. Instead, this game was a beatdown by Miami, who only allowed 3 points in the first 3 quarters. This was an offensive masterpiece orchestrated by QB Tua Tagovailoa. Now, Tua is currently considered one of the worst quarterbacks in the league, and rightfully so: he only has a very low Quarterback Rating of 46.5 and is tied for the most interceptions with Las Vegas Raiders Quarterback and former Seahawk, Geno Smith, with 10 picks. Miami played a great game, and while I don’t think this is a good season for the Phins, with their head coach and general manager both likely to be on the chopping block come season’s end, this will certainly be a bright spot. As for the Falcons, I have just one question for them: WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! I understand that your starting QB was out for this game, but that usually means you lean on the run game, especially when you have a stellar running back in Bijan Robinson, but instead, you only gave him nine carries! As for your defense, I shouldn’t be too surprised they completely disappeared, since they couldn’t stop San Francisco’s one offensive weapon last week. The Falcons are in a really scary situation, as they are in a division where the second place spot and potentially a wild-card playoff spot are up for grabs. They have some very good offensive and defensive pieces, but they need to stop beating themselves. I want to give second-year Head Coach Raheem Morris the benefit of the doubt, but I just can’t after seeing the past two games. This team has the ability to be a contender, but I just don’t think they can get over themselves and do it.
