Through a process of careful and open deliberation among our membership, the students of The Scarlet decided this Monday night to join our peers in the Clark Students for Justice in Palestine divestment campaign.
As journalists, we seek to pursue objective coverage of our campus and steward a platform for diverse community voices. We achieve objectivity collaboratively – by reaching a democratic consensus, through our editorial process and in the endorsements we make.
A majority of our members acknowledged, however, that our role as students – distinct as it can possibly be from our work as journalists – demands that we recognize an objective fact: the University’s endowment fund is invested in corporations benefitting from the ongoing genocide of Palestinians.
As students, we cannot in good conscious take a neutral stance on that fact. It is not debatable. Profiting from death and destruction is wrong. Clark must divest.
The move to join the call for divestment was approved by over 75 percent in a vote of general members. In a vote among Editors, nine were in favor, and two were not present for the vote. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact us.
