Leaving behind shaky nerves and displaced manhole covers, multiple manholes in Worcester exploded on Saturday, January 11, at around 6:15 pm. The cause of these explosions is currently unknown according to CBS News.
CBS News reports the explosions occurred at a busy intersection below Interstate 290. Flying into the sky, the various covers are caught on video by a local bar, MB Lounge, located near the incident.
The video by MB Lounge shows what appears to be at least two heavy cast-iron discs being launched into the air by the explosion. The explosion is quickly followed by a large amount of smoke and flames, the covers narrowly avoiding landing on bystanders and vehicles.
Drivers seen in the security camera footage back up and stop as the ground shakes.
Various news outlets such as CBS News and NBC Boston have reported on the incident, as well as social media sites Facebook and TikTok.
A report by CBS News shows that National Grid, Eversource, Worcester Firefighters, and utility workers have since checked the surrounding areas for dangerous gas but have not found anything.
