The Scarlet Editorial Board would like to express our deepest apologies, as we have been improperly using the terms “editorial”, “op-ed”, and opinions written by an editor, and have not been following journalistic conventions this past year. We, the Editorial Board, take full responsibility for this error and will correct this in all future editions of The Scarlet, both web and print. If there are any further questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to direct them to [email protected].
The following are the correct definitions of the terms, taken from Wikipedia, that we will be adhering to in the future:
Editorial: An article or written document written by the majority of the Editorial Board about a particular topic or public issue.
Op-ed: Short for “opposite of the editorial page”, is usually written for a particular audience by an author with a strong and focused opinion.
Letter to the Editor: A letter in response to a certain publication or article that was put out recently, usually from outside community members.
Opinions Pieces: Everything else, even those written by the Editorial Board member, is considered an opinions piece.
