The Women’s Division I College Basketball season concluded with a bang on Sunday, April 6, as the University of Connecticut Huskies emerged victorious.
The Huskies were ranked second in tournament standings behind the previous years champions, the South Carolina Gamecocks. In her final year of college basketball, Uconn’s Paige Bueckers helped lead the team to a record-breaking Championship win.
With a final score of 82-59, UConn dominated the game, leading in every quarter and never allowing South Carolina to catch up.
Senior Azzi Fudd and freshman forward Sarah Strong each scored 24 points for UConn, while Bueckers contributed 17 points. For the Gamecocks, the top scorers were Joyce Edwards and Tessa Johnson, who managed only 10 points each. This disparity highlights the significant difference in scoring throughout the game.
Geno Auriemma, head coach of the UConn women’s basketball team, now holds the record for the most wins and the highest winning percentage among all coaches, with at least ten years of experience in both women’s and men’s college basketball.
Additionally, this victory marks a record-breaking 12 national titles for UConn Women’s Basketball, surpassing the previous record of 11 championship wins held by the UCLA Men’s Basketball team. Impressively, all these national titles have been won under the exceptional leadership of Auriemma, who boasts a record of 12-1 in national title games.
Fudd ended the game not only with a win but also as the Final Four Most Outstanding Player. Additionally, Strong set new records on Sunday. In her March Madness debut, Strong became the first UConn freshman to achieve four double-doubles in a single NCAA tournament, scoring a total of 114 points and establishing a new Division 1 record for freshmen.
As expected, on April 14, Bueckers was the first overall pick in the 2025 WNBA draft where she was selected by the Dallas Wings. The Huskies have a bright outlook for next season, bolstered by remarkable freshmen like Strong.
