I joined The Scarlet during the Spring semester of my Sophomore year. I had a rough first year and was in zero clubs or organizations – a jittery and anxious young lad with a dream. I decided to go with my dear friend Morgan Martin to The Scarlet meeting after former Editor-in-Chief, Mia Levine, recommended we join.
When I arrived, my first reaction was “wow, student journalists sure are strange”- I had finally found the student organization for me. I then decided to run for Layout Editor with zero experience, which was terrifying, but it was exciting to learn InDesign and felt amazing to work with my team (friends) on a real newspaper.
When I first joined, The Scarlet was not a well-known campus entity for most people; papers were not even regularly available. Now, there are copies of the paper across campus and a real relationship between the students, faculty and administration, that The Scarlet has formed and is continuing to evolve. We get mentioned in professional news organizations like Worcester Telegram and Gazette, and I think we have been doing a fantastic job reporting on the important events and situations on campus to students who otherwise would not receive the information (with the controversy to prove it).
I am so proud of the progress The Scarlet has made in the three years I have been involved, and I hope that we continue the fantastic reporting for many years to come.
Now, I am a Senior, and I am so incredibly grateful to my fellow Scarlet-ers for making this a fantastic student newspaper. I have made so many great friends and fantastic memories here, and I am so excited to see what the future holds for The Scarlet.
With Love,
