On Sept. 27, 2025, the Clark University Cougars faced off against the Wheaton Lyons at home court, the Granger Athletic Complex. The scarlet-and-white Cougars dropped the match 0-1, making their record for the year 3-2-3, and 0-1-1 in NEWMAC games.
The game began at 1:00 p.m., and immediately, Clark put the pressure on offensively, with four shots on goal within the first 20 minutes, although none made it past the goal line. Possession was back and forth, with extended periods of time spent on one side of the pitch, although to this point, Wheaton had been unable to create many shot opportunities. A bright spot, despite the loss, was most certainly the level of defense Clark upheld throughout the first period, making Junior goalkeeper Gabrielle Huryn’s job a bit easier.
The first half ended 0-0, with Senior Emma Shaughnessey, Sophomore Selene Hammad, Sophomore Georgia Louis, and Sophomore Solimar Rivera all putting shots on target in the first half. The second half saw substitutions on both sides, and the game opened up from there. Wheaton was able to put shots on target, but goalkeeper Junior Ava Lepro put up two emphatic saves to keep the Cougars on track.
Much to the dismay of the home crowd, Wheaton’s Ali Roche fired the ball just to the left of Lepro’s grasp, giving the Lyons a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute, which Clark’s offense was unable to respond to. Some confusion emerged in the 60th minute when Senior Cassidy Hubbard appeared to have squeezed the ball into Wheaton’s goal, but the officiating crew ruled no goal. The game got physical after the near miss, with six combined fouls after the fact. The Cougars’ last shot attempt came in the 86th minute, but it went into the hands of Wheaton’s goalkeeper, and the game ended 0-1 for the Cougars.
Clark Women’s Soccer returns to the home field on Saturday, Oct. 4, where they face Emerson in a NEWMAC game. Show up, show out, and Roll Cougs!
