I got stuck in the elevator.
What was just another day of heading back to my apartment after class turned out to be an inexplicable predicament. I got into the elevator and pressed the “4” button, to which the elevator slowly went down and stopped suddenly, without the doors opening.
I was unworried when it first happened, being the experienced elevator user I am (I’m not a fan of stairs). I know that with these old elevators, sometimes it takes the doors a while to open. But I slowly realized that it would seem that there was some sort of malfunction.
I should say that this took place in the Sackler elevator, which in all honesty was probably one of the better elevators to be trapped in, as it’s bigger. Being in the Jefferson elevator would have been its own kind of hell.
One of the biggest worries when being trapped in an elevator is whether or not you have cell service. Luckily, I had cell service, and so I was able to contact someone to get me out. However, the reason that Facilities knew I was stuck in the elevator was because I had jokingly texted a handful of friends that I was stuck in an elevator, to which they all individually contacted Facilities.
Eventually, somebody came to the elevator and knocked on it, asking me if I was there and that they were trying to get me out. I also emailed my professor for a class I had in 20 minutes that I would possibly be late for class, given I was stuck in an elevator. I would go on to be stuck for about half an hour.
I was eventually able to get out because of someone from Facilities who flipped a few switches and got the elevator to work again. The fire department was also apparently on their way to get me out but I was able to get out before they arrived. Overall, this was a hilarious experience, 10/10, and I somehow managed to get to class on time.
