Broncos VS Patriots:
The New England Patriots travelled a mile high Sunday, Jan 25th, to play the Denver Broncos for the AFC Championship and a ticket to the Super Bowl. The Patriots have had a surprising season this year, going from just four wins last season to 14 this year, which gave them the AFC East title and the 2nd seed in the playoffs. The Broncos, on the other hand, built on a solid 2024 season, going from 10 wins to 14, which was enough to clinch the 1st overall seed in the AFC. Unfortunately for the Broncos, their quarterback, Bo Nix, broke his ankle in the Divisional round of the playoffs last week, which made him unable to play for the rest of the season. The loss of Bo Nix ultimately proved to be Denver’s downfall, as they were defeated by the Patriots with a score of 7-10. This game was completely dominated by defense, as the Broncos’ defense kept Pats quarterback Drake “Drake Maye” Maye from completing more than half his passes, and did not allow him to throw for a touchdown, though he did run for one. The Patriots’ defense also played a great game, taking advantage of the bad decisions made by both the Broncos’ coaching staff and backup Broncos quarterback Jarrett Stidham, who caused two turnovers that ultimately decided the game. This game was a defensive slog, especially when it started snowing. While I don’t want to take away from the Patriots’ victory because they earned it, I do think if Bo Nix was playing, the Broncos would have won that game. Although hypotheticals don’t win games, it should give Broncos fans some hope for next season. As for everyone else, the evil empire is back in the Super Bowl, and it seems like a new age of Patriots dominance could be on the horizon.
Seahawks VS Rams:
The Seattle Seahawks hosted the Los Angeles Rams in Lumen Field on Sunday, Jan 25th, in a third rivalry matchup this season for the NFC Championship and the last ticket for the Super Bowl. Both teams have had strong seasons, with the Rams having the best scoring offense and the Seahawks having the best scoring defense. This was set up to be a very close game, and it was. There was never a point in this game where the score gap was more than one score, and neither team allowed a 100-yard rusher. But the Seahawks were able to keep the Rams at arm’s length, as they pulled away with a win with a score of 31-27. Frankly, this is the kind of game I expected from the Rams. They were able to make some noise with their wide receivers, Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, but due to their major weaknesses in their secondary and special teams, compounded by bad clock management and awkward play calling by their head coach, Sean McVay, they were not able to get the job done. This was absolutely the most complete game the Seahawks played all season offensively, though there were times the defense struggled, mostly due to a taunting penalty by cornerback Tariq Woolen, but they were able to remember their MOB mentality and get the stop. No matter what happens from here on out, I am very proud of this team and what they’ve been able to accomplish despite the adversity they’ve faced, from injuries to bad officiating to doubts in the media. This team is having everything clicking at the right time, which is going to make them a very dangerous team in the Super Bowl.
My Super Bowl Prediction:
Now that the matchup for Super Bowl LX has been decided, it’s time to figure out which team is going to bring back the Lombardi Trophy and a Super Bowl ring. If you told me or anyone else that this season’s Super Bowl would be between the Patriots and the Seahawks, they would have said you were crazy. Both teams missed the playoffs last year, but are now the only teams remaining. When it comes to the Patriots offense, there are only two words I need to say: Drake Maye. Drake Maye has been electric all year, having high accuracy on his deep passes and always being a running threat once a hole in the pocket opens, making him the clear MVP favorite. He doesn’t have the best supporting cast, as his running back didn’t have even a thousand yards rushing and his leading receiver only had 1,013 yards in the regular season. I think the latter stat says more about Maye’s ability to spread the ball around than the ability of his receivers. But despite Drake Maye’s clear talents, he is still only in his second year in the NFL, which means he can still make rookie mistakes. He has had some trouble with turnovers in the postseason, fumbling six times and throwing two interceptions in his past three games. And while you could say that was because he was playing some of the strongest defenses in the league, he is going into a game with the #1 defense. If the Seahawks want to win, they will have to put some pressure on Drake Maye and force him to make some bad throws and cause some turnovers. Winning the turnover battle is also key for the Patriots to win as well. The Seahawks quarterback, Sam Darnold, has had some issues early in the season and his career with turnovers, having caused 20 this season. But that hasn’t been an issue as of late, as Darnold has not caused a turnover in the past three games, all against playoff teams. The Seahawks offense is going to have to put in work come Super Bowl Sunday, as the Patriots’ defense is no joke. Unlike the teams the Seahawks have played recently, they have a very strong secondary, which could pick off Darnold if he tries to make a play when he shouldn’t. But regardless of the skill of the secondary, some of the Seahawks receivers like Jaxon “JSN” Smith-Njigba and Rahid “The Shaheed Demon” Shaheed should still be able to get open with their elite speed and agility to get some big yards and touchdowns. Another thing that has to be taken into account is the effect of the fans. The Seahawks have the power of the 12th man on their side, especially since this game is being played in Santa Clara, California, which Seahawks fans have had no issue with traveling to before. The noise they create will certainly have an impact on the game. Considering all of these factors, plus my bias as a Seahawks fan, I don’t really see a situation where the Patriots are the clear winners, which is why I am picking the Seahawks to win 37-16. Regardless of who wins, it’s definitely going to be a great game. Go Hawks.
